Gouache is a type of water soluble paint, sometimes known as "opaque watercolour". Gouache is notable for being opaque, and its quickly drying to a flat, solid tone when applied evenly.

While gouache can be used to create art resembling traditional watercolour paintings, in modern times, gouache's opaqueness has made it popular for artists looking to create lineless or cel shaded images using traditional media. Gouache was used in traditional animation to paint on celluloid sheets (also known as cels, the origin of "cel shading"), and since the 20th century has been used for posters, comics, illustrations, book covers, and more.
