until they like it
post #393006 post #4137393 post #4186883 post #2688299 post #2912743 post #949929 post #2736867
Posts showing a character who first dislikes something, but later they enjoy that thing after experiencing it enough.
Here "until" implies lengthy or repeated exposure to a negative experience, but often this is not directly shown and instead only implied through a time lapse or text. Sometimes the character's breaking point is shown with an abrupt change in tone mid-sentence, from rejection to enjoyment.
This tag is very strongly associated with rape but can apply to any other forced situation where a character does not control what happens to them. Rarely, this tag can even apply to consenting situations where, for example, a character begrudgingly undertakes an ordeal and over time starts to enjoy it, which people often experience in real life toward things like exercise, projects, and work.
This tag does not invalidate the rape tag. In spite of the character later enjoying their experience, please keep all tags that applied when the character disliked their experience.
Commentary
This tag was originally intended for the rape trope where the victim starts enjoying the actions of their abuser. This trope suggests that a rape victim still feels pleasure from sex, and that a persistent rapist can outlast their victim's resistance until the victim only feels pleasure, which they can no longer deny. This trope is fantasy and does not happen in real life. Do not attempt it.
Also, this tag's origin has created a stigma that expects an abuser or victimizing force, but those things are not strictly required to use this tag. A character's preexisting preferences and prejudices can cause them to dislike something, which they can overcome through experience, learning to enjoy the thing they once disliked.
Do not confuse with
Posts with this tag must show both (1) a character disliking something and (2) that same character later liking it.
- comic, story_in_description, pools, image sets, parent/child posts, post descriptions, etc - these tell stories and can show until_they_like_it situations in detail. However, only tag until_they_like_it on the posts showing both the character's old dislike and new enjoyment toward a certain experience. Do not use this tag on posts only showing one of these things. Sometimes, a group of posts or story does have an until_they_like_it subplot but does not show both of this tag's requirements on any single post. These posts cannot be tagged with until_they_like_it. This is a limitation of boorus that cannot tag and search collections of posts (e.g., tagging entire pools by theme).
- forced_orgasm, unwanted_erection, etc - a character's body acting against their will. This is not proof of pleasure or consent, so until_they_like_it requires something more definitive.
- mind_break - a character mentally overwhelmed by extreme stimuli, forcing them to become unresponsive or their personality to drastically change. This is commonly the transition between non-consent and enjoyment in until_they_like_it. Many mind_break posts do not show the broken character's previous displeasure, which until_they_like_it requires.
- mind_control - using special means to influence a character's ability to think normally. This often compels a resisting character to become submissive, obedient, and take pleasure in things they normally wouldn't. For mind_control posts to qualify for until_they_like_it, they must still show the mind controlled character's dislike toward an experience or the idea of it.
- questionable_consent - situations that raise doubt about consent but lack proof of non-consent. A character who does not clearly first show a dislike and later enjoyment toward an experience should not get tagged with until_they_like_it. In general, until_they_like_it will clearly demonstrate dislike and enjoyment whereas questionable_consent distorts dislike and/or enjoyment.
- rape_play - consenting partners roleplaying a rape fantasy.
- secretly_loves_it - a character concealing their enjoyment of something, often by vocally expressing displeasure or suppressing their reactions. This can overlap with until_they_like_it, but usually the viewer sees that the character expressing displeasure in secretly_loves_it has probably enjoyed their experience the entire time.
- standard explicitly_stated_nonconsent, forced, rape, etc - only tag until_they_like_it if the victim does eventually express enjoyment. Do not tag until_they_like_it just because the abuser is persistent or vows to continue their abuse "until you like it." That is just standard non-consent, nothing special.
