The Nintendo GameCube is Nintendo's fourth game console after the release of the Nintendo 64, released in 2001 in Japan and North America, and in 2002 in Europe and Australia. After learning their lesson from using cartridges on the Nintendo 64, Nintendo switched to a disc based system for the first time, but instead of using DVDs like the PlayStation 2 and the Xbox was doing, they instead used miniDVDs, which couldn't hold as much space as a DVD, with miniDVDs having a maximum 1.5gb of space compared to a DVDs 4.7gb (or 8.5gb if double layered). Not to mention, the design of the console made it look "kiddie" compared to it's competition, and these factors, along with not as good 3rd party games as the competitors, it made the GameCube place 3rd in the console wars of that generation, selling about 22 million units compared to the Xbox's 24 million, and the PlayStation 2's 155 million. However, that being said, the GameCube did have a strong library of games, such as Super Mario Sunshine, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, and the best selling game on the console, Super Smash Bros. Melee. The system was discontinued in 2007, with Madden 07 being the last game released for the system. The Nintendo GameCube is considered one of Nintendo's best and unappreciated (at the time) game systems. The GameCube hardware was later used in the Wii, which was much more successful and had more people become interested in the GameCube, as it was backwards compatible with the Wii.
