Apes are Old World anthropoid mammals, more specifically a group of tailless catarrhine primates, belonging to the biological superfamily Hominoidea. The apes are native to Africa and Southeast Asia. Apes are the largest primates and the orangutan is the largest living arboreal animal.
Members of the ape family are split into two subgroups:
- Hylobatidae; consisting of four genera and sixteen species of gibbon, including the lar gibbon and siamang. Commonly referred to as the lesser apes.
- Hominidae, comprised of bonobos, chimpanzees, orangutans, gorillas, and humans. Commonly referred to as the great apes.
