Pasiphaë was the daughter of Helios, sister to Circe, and given to marriage with King Minos of Crete. When Minos fought with his brothers for control of the throne, he asked Poseidon to grant him a snow-white bull (the Cretan Bull) as a sign of support. Poseidon answered his request under the condition that the Bull be sacrificed in honor of Poseidon. However Minos could not bear to part with the animal and instead sacrificed a normal bull. Upset by the duplicity Poseidon cursed Pasiphaë to lust after the Cretan Bull insatiably. Pasiphaë commissioned the artificer Daedalus to construct a hollow wooden cow into which she could climb and be mounted by the bull for copulation. The result was the birth of the Minotaur, half-man and half-bull.
