Delhi Capitals’ skipper, Meg Lanning, was disappointed after her side fell short at the final hurdle for a third consecutive final in the Women’s Premier League after losing by a margin of 8 runs to Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League 2025 summit clash on Saturday.

Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, the former Australian international reflected on the season where the franchise did well, finishing at the top, but rued on the poor performance in the final where just one good partnership could have made the difference.

Despite the opening pair being dismissed cheaply, Jemimah Rodrigues looked to revive the Delhi Capitals’ chase, but her dismissal put further pressure on the side. Marizanne Kapp stood up next with her flurry of boundaries and maximums, but Natalie Sciver-Brunt came out on top as the all-rounder was caught by the fielder at the long-off region. The youngster, Niki Prasad, looked to take the chase deep, but her efforts proved to be futile in the end.

“We have had another good season, and unfortunately, we couldn’t get over the line. Congrats to Mumbai – you have been excellent throughout the season. Chasing 150 was a pretty good target for us; one more partnership could have been enough, but I’m proud of the team," Lanning commented.

The DC skipper was asked if the week-long break after finishing top of the points table proved to be a hindrance, but Lanning dismissed any such concerns and highlighted the importance of performing in the big games as well

“There’s no right or wrong way to do it. Performing on the night is important, and Mumbai were too good tonight. We haven’t been able to put our best performance in the final on the board, which is disappointing, but that’s cricket," she shared.

“It has just not happened for us. We are bitterly disappointed; we put ourselves in a good position but couldn’t finish it off," she concluded.

The franchise has yet to find its first title in either the men’s or women’s team. The WPL side were the ones that were dominating throughout the league stages across the last three editions but somehow stumbled at the finals.
