Many greats of the game called time on their careers in 2024. While the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja bid goodbye to T20Is after starring in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 title win in Barbados on June 29, stalwarts like David Warner, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shikhar Dhawan, and James Anderson, among many others, quit all three formats of the game this year.

As we march towards the end of 2024, here’s a look at some of the top players who decided to call it time on their legendary careers this year.

    David Warner: Left-handed opening batter David Warner is Australia’s second-leading run scorer in international cricket. He played his last red-ball match for the Baggy Greens against Pakistan at his home ground in Sydney from January 3-6 and scored 34 and 57 runs. His last white-ball match was in the T20 World Cup 2024 against India at Gros Islet on June 24.

    James Anderson: Legendary England pacer James Anderson ended his 21-year and 188-match-long Test career on July 12, 2024, at Lord’s. He signed off with 704 wickets in the five-day format of the game and overall 991 in international cricket. His final match was against the West Indies.

    Ravichandran Ashwin: Ashwin, who is India’s second-leading wicket-taker in Tests as well as international cricket, announced his retirement from international cricket on December 18, 2024. The 38-year-old spinner, who holds the record for taking the most wickets in WTC, finished his career with 537, 156, and 72 wickets in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is, respectively.

    Dean Elgar: Former South African Test captain Dean Elgar played his last match against India at Newlands in Cape Town from January 3-4. The left-handed batter scored 5347 runs in 86 five-day matches for the Proteas.

    Neil Wagner: New Zealand fast bowler Neil Wagner called time on his 64-match-long Test career in February 2024. His last match was against South Africa in Hamilton, and the 38-year-old left-arm medium pacer finished his career with 260 wickets.

    Shikhar Dhawan: Opening batter Shikhar Dhawan, who last played for India in December 2022 against Bangladesh, retired from international cricket in August. The 39-year-old left-handed batter signed off with 2315, 6793, and 1759 runs in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is for India.

    Dinesh Karthik: Wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik called time on his cricket career after the conclusion of IPL 2024. The member of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy-winning team last played for Men in Blue in the 2022 T20 World Cup and finished his career with 1025 Test, 1752 ODI, and 686 T20I runs.

    Tim Southee: Former New Zealand Test captain Tim Southee played his Test match against England at Seddon Park in Hamilton on December 17. The 36-year-old fast bowler finished his Test career with 391 wickets and 2245 runs in 107 matches. He is yet to make an official announcement on his retirement from white-ball cricket.

    Shakib Al Hasan: Former Bangladesh captain and legendary all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan announced his retirement from T20Is in September 2024. During his 18-year-long T20I career, Shakib played 129 matches and scored 2551 runs in addition to getting rid of 149 batters.

    Rohit Sharma: Rohit Sharma, who is the all-time leading run scorer in T20Is, announced his retirement from the shortest format of the game on June 29, 2024, after leading India to its second T20 World Cup title win. The only Indian cricketer to win two T20 World Cup winners medals is the all-time leading run scorer and six-hitter in T20Is.

    Virat Kohli: Batting superstar Virat Kohli also quit the shortest format of the game on June 29, 2024, after winning Player of the Match in the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup. The 36-year-old batter finished his career with 4188 runs in 125 matches and holds the record of scoring the most runs in T20 World Cup history.

      Ravindra Jadeja: A day after India’s T20 World Cup 2024 title win, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja also called time on his T20I career. Jadeja played 74 matches in the shortest format of the game for India since making his debut in Colombo on February 10, 2009, against Sri Lanka and scored 515 runs in addition to dismissing 54 batters.

      In addition to them, players like Moeen Ali, Matthew Wade, Wriddhiman Saha, Mohammad Amir, Imad Wasim, Kedar Jadhav, Colin Munro, David Wiese, Dawid Malan, Shannon Gabriel, Will Pucovski, Barinder Sran, Siddarth Kaul, Varun Aaron and Saurabh Tiwary also retired from all formats of the game, whereas South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen quit Test cricket and Bangladesh’s Mahmudullah decided to leave T20Is.
