Three injured in shootout during Waterkloof robbery attempt

Three people were injured in a shootout during an attempted house robbery in Waterkloof Heights in the early hours of Saturday.

Police said three people were injured in a shootout during an attempted house robbery in Waterkloof Heights in the early hours of Saturday.

According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, the incident happened at approximately 01:30.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that five unknown male suspects contacted the son of the household, who was inside the residence with his mother and told him to open the front door.

“Observing the suspects on the property’s security cameras, the mother immediately alerted their private security company for assistance.”

Van Dyk said upon the arrival of the armed response team, a confrontation ensued, leading to an exchange of gunfire.

“During the altercation, the security officer sustained a gunshot wound to his back. The son was shot in the leg, while the mother received 2 gunshot wounds in the arm.”

He said all the injured victims were transported to a hospital for medical treatment.

“During the preliminary investigation, officers noted open cabinets and an open jewelry box, suggesting a possible house robbery.

“A firearm, presumably used by the suspects, was recovered at the scene and has been booked as evidence.”

Van Dyk added that the firearm will undergo forensic analysis to determine whether it has been linked to other crimes.

The Brooklyn SAPS has launched investigations into charges of attempted murder and house robbery.

“The police urge anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to contact Brooklyn SAPS.”

Meanwhile, the Volunteer Emergency Medical Response Unit (VEMRU) attended the scene.

“On arrival, three patients were found in serious and critical conditions.

“Our team, along with other first responders, started stabilizing the patients.”

It furthermore said two of the injured were transported to nearby hospitals via ambulances while one sustained critical injuries, and the decision was made to airlift them to a specialist Trauma hospital in Johannesburg.
