    Armor is expensive.

    If you gotta save money you trust the shield to cover the body and instead armor up what it doesn't.

    Granted that works a lot better in formations.

    And assumes that the dude isn't multiple feet taller than everyone else.

    That makes sense but i believe it's a necessity given the blindspots a man of that size would have during combat, specially with that kind of helmet design which only invites your oponnents to try sneaking up behind you or attacking from your flanks.
