So, the opening post of this thread includes the lyrics of a Helen Reddy song. I know LOTS of Helen Reddy songs because an older sister and cousins were once big fans. The song in the OP is something of an anthem, and I can deal with that. But it brought to mind ANOTHER Helen Reddy song, which is a nominee for "worst song ever written" and now I can't get THAT song out of my head!

Since I woke up at 4:30 a.m. with this hideous Helen Reddy song in my head, that experience caused me to recall the lyrics of a *bites pillow* PARTRIDGE FAMILY song!!

Somebody told me, (In jest I hope.) that in pushing Strong Women, I was inferring the lack of need for a man. Leaving only lesbian or masturbation stories.

I can think of nothing further from the truth!

I was raised around some of the strongest women you could ever meet! ( possibly more on this later. ) Women who stepped up and did what needed to be done! From the seemingly mundane, to the utmost of heroism. The majority of these women have one thing in common. They love, and are loyal to the men in their lives. And you better believe they expect love and loyalty in return!

Please don't get me started on weather or not a man should be in charge or not, it has no bearing on this theme. A woman can be strong, self-sufficient, smart, successful, and everything I am looking for here, and still be a romantic dreamer to boot!

 

Tsk. I think you do have a point, and while I do have an issue or two with the theme, it has nothing to do with it being about women (but characters being set (and thus possibly forced into a story) - reminds me of series and such where they add a character just to say "Look! We have ___!"). And the second, strong characters in general, since the ones that appeal to me just don't fit... what I'm looking for in stories for this site/forum/CAW. But, it's part of the challenge, so we'll see

The latter which just happened with a second idea I had, the character started out strong, and then progressed into something else; the story turned dark, and then took a right turn into fucked up. So the idea is a bust, and I'll probably go back to the first one within a day or two... and stop needlessly rambling here, instead of writing.

All in all, you're the host, you've set a good theme, so try not to needlessly fret about it.

 

In the short time I've been watching these CAW contests, this topic is the most open and provides the greatest range of stories that could be written. The strong part hardly puts a limit on the number of characters to choose from. I think it's great, better than, write about this picture or write about a movie you've seen or a story you have read. Those aren't terribly limiting either, but this one is wide open.

 

Sometimes I re-read parts of my old stories for help on wording something. I've been doing that for this CAW and realized a number of my old stories could work. I never wrote about heroic women per se, but I've featured a widowed emergency room nurse, a young artist, and a divorced librarian in recent entries. It wouldn't take much revision to enter them this time if that were allowed.

My point is, everyday women can be strong and heroic. Look at your own mother, the widow down the street, the mom with the special needs kid, your own kid's favorite teacher, the convenience store clerk who swings a baseball bat at a punk robber, or the woman who rescues stray dogs.

Over half the world's population is female. If you want to draw from life, there are lots of examples.

A Colorado woman managed to fight off a mountain lion that was attacking her 5-year-old son.

During the harrowing rescue Friday evening, she "reached into the animal's mouth and wrested her son's head from its jaws,".

The child was playing outside with his brother when his mother heard the sound of screaming. She rushed outside to find a mountain lion on top of her son.

"The woman charged the animal, yanked away one of its paws and discovered her son's whole head was in its mouth," The Associated Press reported. She was then "able to physically remove her son from the mountain lion," the police said.

"She was able to pry the cat's jaws open," Deputy Michael Buglione told The Aspen Times. "She's a hero."

The child sustained injuries to his face, head and neck and is now in "fair condition," according to the police. He was transferred from Aspen to a hospital in Denver. His mother sustained minor injuries to her legs and hand.

The child and his mother's names have not been released.

Law enforcement officers responding to a 911 call found and killed a mountain lion in the family's front yard, the police said.

The mountain lion believed to be responsible for the attack was approximately two years old and male, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said in a statement.

"It wasn't a big cat," Buglione said, according to the Associated Press. "Had it been a 110-pound lion — which I've seen around here — this would have been a much different story."

CPW said that two lions "were seen in the near vicinity prior to the incident" – and according to The Aspen Times, a second big cat was tracked by hounds and killed ea
CPW added that that last time a mountain lion attacked a human in Colorado occurred in July 2015, when a lion scratched and bit a man fishing near the town of Dotsero.

Some 4,500 mountain lions live in Colorado, the AP reported. And CPW said lion sightings are on the rise, "likely due to a growing human population encroaching on lion habitat in conjunction with a robust lion population in the state."

 

I have an idea for this but it is going to be extremely controversial even though it is based on a present-day event.

For anyone who is still struggling with the concept of the theme, stop and have a good think. This compy gives so much scope that everyone should be able to produce at least one entry, and they don't have to be lesbian or dominatrix stories.

In a shameless bit of self publicity I'm going to post a link to a short(ish - 7,000 words) story I wrote several years ago which would have fitted this criteria, the central character isn't some rampant dominant woman, she becomes a housewife and mother, suffers from post-natal depression but eventually gets herself a successful career and a romantic interlude then, ultimately, control over her own life.

I was particularily proud of this story at the time but despite adding some gratuitous sex in the middle it didn't get a tremendous amount of reads or positive votes. Ho-hum.
