  • Alex fucking killed it with the intro then followed it up with "umm...hi..." -- making both an awe-inspiring God, but also one that is awkward and bumbling just like the rest of us.

If that doesn't give him dick points with the ladies, then I don't know what would.

wait is this true? how is that possible?

    Okay, long ass post ahead.

"Drowning in fresh water and entering a large amount of pool or river water into the lungs and stomach is much more dangerous than swallowing a lot of sea water. Swallowing plenty of freshwater leads to quick absorption into blood from the gastrointestinal tract due to a lower osmotic pressure than blood; therefore, it increases blood volume in a short amount of time that results in the loss of red blood cells (hemolysis). Unlike freshwater, saltwater does not induce the above complications because of having the equal osmotic pressure to blood, and it just increases slightly sodium and chlorine causing mild symptoms."

Basically, when you drown in fresh water it filters out into your body because it is pure water, which kills you faster by being absorbed into the bloodstream and reducing sodium ion concentration. This basically causes your cells to expand and explode, resulting in mass releases of potassium ions, which when combined with the lack of sodium, causes the heart to stop.
Whereas in saltwater, none of that fancy shit happens and instead you simply asphyxiate, which takes a lot longer than people think.
A person is unconscious within 1-3 minutes without air, and by 5 minutes there will be irreversible brain-damage. But drowning isn't as simple as being held under the water in most cases -- people thrash and are able to get just a seconds worth of breath in between bouts of inhaling and swallowing water. Under these circumstances, it can take up to half an hour to drown in the ocean, whereas it takes 10-20 minutes in saltwater.
It's also worthy of note that even if you survive the initial drowning, you can still die like three days later due to the electrolyte imbalance caused by having saltwater in your body.

  • It is my head-canon that the original strip is how Alexander remembers them meeting, then Gloria steps in and tells the actual version which is closer to this.
Edit: Apparently I'm not alone because checking the source, someone posted the exact same thought!
